A Corporate Executive’s Guide to Schools and Commutes: Chesterfield to Ladue to Clayton vs. Town & Country

If you're relocating to St. Louis for a corporate executive position, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is:

Where should we live?

The answer isn't as simple as finding the most expensive home or the neighborhood closest to your office.

For executive families, the decision usually involves several competing priorities:

  • Excellent schools
  • A manageable commute
  • A high-quality home
  • Privacy and space
  • Access to restaurants, shopping and entertainment
  • Proximity to private schools
  • Convenient highway access
  • A neighborhood that fits your lifestyle

Fortunately, some of St. Louis' most desirable communities—Chesterfield, Town & Country, Frontenac, Ladue and Clayton—offer very different combinations of these advantages.

The key is understanding which community best fits your work location and your family's priorities.

As a St. Louis native and Global Luxury Real Estate Advisor who has been selling St. Louis real estate since 1996, Aimee Simpson helps relocating executives and families understand the differences between St. Louis neighborhoods, schools, commute patterns and housing options.

Start With Your Office Location

Before choosing a neighborhood, look at where you'll actually be spending your workweek.

St. Louis' major corporate and employment centers are spread across the metropolitan area. Some executives work in downtown St. Louis or Clayton. Others work in West County, Chesterfield, Maryland Heights or along the I-64 corridor.

That can make a significant difference in where you want to live.

If your office is in Clayton or the Central Corridor

Consider:

Clayton • Ladue • Frontenac • Huntleigh

These communities provide relatively convenient access to Clayton while offering very different residential lifestyles.

If your office is in West County or Chesterfield

Consider:

Town & Country • Chesterfield • Frontenac

These communities can reduce the daily drive while offering larger homes, spacious lots and easy access to I-64 and I-270.

If you want an urban lifestyle

Consider:

Clayton

Clayton offers something the suburban communities don't: the ability to live close to restaurants, shopping, business offices and entertainment with less reliance on a car.

Chesterfield: The West County Executive Lifestyle

For executives working in West County, Chesterfield can be a very practical choice.

The community offers a wide range of housing, from established neighborhoods to newer luxury homes, along with extensive shopping, restaurants, parks, recreational amenities and convenient access to major highways.

Chesterfield is also home to major corporate and research employers, including Bayer Crop Science and Pfizer Inc..

Schools in Chesterfield

Chesterfield is not served by just one school district.

Depending on the location, properties can fall within districts including Parkway and Rockwood, among others.

There are also a number of private-school options in and around West County, including The Fulton School.

This makes the exact address particularly important.

Why executives choose Chesterfield

  • Convenient access to I-64
  • Close to major West County employers
  • Broad selection of homes
  • Larger properties available
  • Extensive shopping and dining
  • Parks and recreational amenities
  • Variety of public and private school options

Best for: Executives who work in Chesterfield or western St. Louis County and want convenience, space and a suburban lifestyle.

Town & Country: A Sweet Spot for Executive Families

For many relocating executives, Town & Country may offer one of the best balances between commute, schools, home size and lifestyle.

Located along the I-64 corridor, Town & Country provides relatively easy access to both Clayton and West County.

The community is known for spacious homes, established neighborhoods, mature trees and larger properties.

And unlike many communities where the school district is obvious from the city name, Town & Country is divided among multiple school districts, including Parkway, Kirkwood and Ladue.

That means the specific address matters.

Schools and private-school access

Town & Country is also convenient to several private-school options.

Westminster Christian Academy is located in Town & Country, while Christian Brothers College High School is nearby.

Principia School is also located in the Town & Country area.

Why executives choose Town & Country

  • Convenient I-64 access
  • Larger homes and lots
  • Quiet residential neighborhoods
  • Close to Chesterfield
  • Reasonable access to Clayton
  • Strong selection of public and private schools
  • Shopping and dining nearby
  • Estate-style homes available

Best for: Executive families who want a large luxury home, excellent school options and convenient access to both Clayton and West County.

Frontenac: Luxury Living With Central-Corridor Convenience

Frontenac is an especially interesting choice for an executive who wants a luxury home without moving as far west as Chesterfield or Town & Country.

Its location puts residents close to Clayton, Ladue and major Central Corridor amenities while also providing convenient highway access.

Frontenac is particularly attractive for buyers who want:

  • A spacious luxury home
  • Established neighborhoods
  • Mature trees
  • Privacy
  • Convenient access to Clayton
  • Easy access to upscale shopping
  • Proximity to Ladue and private schools

Many Frontenac properties are located within the Ladue School District, but—as with all St. Louis County communities—the exact property should be verified before making a purchase.

Best for: Executives who want a central location and luxury home without being quite as far west as Chesterfield.

Ladue: Schools, Prestige & Proximity to Clayton

For executives who want to be close to Clayton while living in a beautiful residential community, Ladue is one of St. Louis' most sought-after choices.

Ladue combines:

  • Large and established properties
  • Mature landscaping
  • Beautiful luxury homes
  • Privacy
  • Convenient access to Clayton
  • Easy access to private schools
  • A highly regarded public school district

The Ladue School District currently serves more than 4,500 students and reports a 97.4% graduation rate for the Class of 2026, with 91% of graduates continuing to a two- or four-year college or university.

For families considering private schools, Ladue is also exceptionally well located.

MICDS and John Burroughs School are both located in the Ladue area.

Why executives choose Ladue

  • Highly regarded public schools
  • Close to Clayton
  • Beautiful luxury homes
  • Large, established lots
  • Mature neighborhoods
  • Convenient Central Corridor location
  • Close to many private schools
  • Easy access to shopping and dining

Best for: Executives who want an upscale residential lifestyle, excellent schools and a relatively short commute to Clayton.

Clayton: The Choice for Urban Executive Living

Then there is Clayton.

For an executive who doesn't want a traditional suburban lifestyle, Clayton may be the most compelling option.

Clayton is the business center of St. Louis County and offers a walkable environment with restaurants, coffee shops, shopping, entertainment and luxury condominiums.

The School District of Clayton serves students from preschool through high school and includes six schools.

For families who want public schools but also want to live close to work, Clayton offers a unique combination.

For families who prefer private schools, its Central Corridor location provides convenient access to numerous independent and religious schools.

Why executives choose Clayton

  • Walkability
  • Restaurants and entertainment
  • Luxury condominiums
  • Less home maintenance
  • Convenient access to downtown St. Louis
  • Close to Ladue and Frontenac
  • Strong Central Corridor location
  • Excellent option for a lock-and-leave lifestyle

Best for: Executives who prioritize convenience, walkability and proximity to the office over having a large yard.

What About the Commute?

One of the biggest advantages of the St. Louis Central Corridor is that several desirable communities are relatively close to one another.

But commute time is highly dependent on your exact office location, home location, school drop-off, time of day and traffic conditions.

Rather than promising a specific number of minutes, I recommend relocating buyers look at the actual daily route from a prospective home to both their office and their children's schools.

I-64 is particularly important for executives comparing Clayton, Ladue, Frontenac, Town & Country and Chesterfield.

Town & Country, for example, has direct access to I-64 and I-270, while Clayton is connected to the regional highway network through I-170 and I-64.

The difference of several miles can feel very different during the morning and evening commute.

The School Question Is More Complicated Than the City Name

This is one of the most important things for an executive relocating to St. Louis to understand:

Your city or mailing address does not necessarily tell you which school district your children will attend.

Town & Country is a particularly good example. The city is served by Parkway, Kirkwood and Ladue school districts.

Likewise, school boundaries can extend beyond municipal boundaries.

That's why I recommend that relocating families:

  1. Identify the schools they want.
  2. Identify the neighborhoods that feed into those schools.
  3. Compare those neighborhoods based on commute.
  4. Then compare the homes available within those boundaries.

This approach can save a relocating family considerable time.

Public School vs. Private School

Another question many executive families ask is whether they should prioritize a particular public-school district or choose a home based on proximity to a private school.

The answer depends on your family.

The Central Corridor provides access to a remarkable concentration of public and private educational options.

In the Ladue and Clayton area, families can consider schools such as MICDS and John Burroughs in addition to the public school systems.

In Town & Country and West County, families have access to schools such as Westminster Christian Academy, Principia and other private-school options.

The important consideration is not simply "Which school is best?"

It is:

"Which school and community are the best fit for our family and our daily life?"

Aimee Simpson's Advice for Relocating Executives

When a corporate executive calls me about relocating to St. Louis, I don't start by sending a list of houses.

I start with questions.

Where is your office?

Do you want public or private schools?

How old are your children?

How important is the school commute?

Do you want a large yard and pool?

Would you rather have a condominium with minimal maintenance?

Do you want to be close to restaurants?

How important is being near the airport?

Do you want to be closer to Clayton or West County?

The answers usually narrow the search considerably.

A family relocating to a senior executive position in Clayton may have a very different ideal home than a family whose executive works in Chesterfield.

And that is why neighborhood knowledge matters as much as knowing the current listings.

The Bottom Line: Choose the Lifestyle Before the House

If you're relocating to St. Louis for a corporate executive position, don't begin your search by asking:

"What's the nicest house we can buy?"

Start with:

"Where will our family live best?"

If you want a shorter commute and an urban lifestyle, start with Clayton.

If schools and proximity to Clayton are priorities, explore Ladue.

If you want luxury and a central location, consider Frontenac.

If you want a larger home and a balance between Clayton and West County, look at Town & Country.

If your office is in West County and you want convenience and space, Chesterfield may be the right fit.

And if privacy and estate living are at the top of your list, Huntleigh and Ladue deserve a close look.

The best neighborhood isn't necessarily the one with the biggest house.

It's the one that makes your family's everyday life work best.
